German Scientist and His African Tree

http://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-africa-40173337/is-this-africa-s-tallest-tree

In a BBC News article, a German scientist, Andreas Hemp says he discovered the tallest tree in Africa. The tree is about 600 years old and is located in the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve in Tanzania. According to Mr. Hemp, “He discovered the tree about 20 years ago but only recently found the equipment to measure its height.” If the tree is about 600 years old, on another continent from Mr. Hemp’s roots, how can he claim he found a 600-year old tree?  No other human being saw this tree before this German scientist or is this another case of claiming something that wasn’t his to claim?
